Chapter 42

As the Deer Thirsts, So My Soul Thirsts

The soul thirsting for the living Elohim like a deer for water echoes Yeshua's cry of thirst from the cross — the One who IS the living water, thirsting for our redemption.

  1. As the Deer Pants for Water

The deer pants for water, and the soul pants for Elohim. When you feel spiritually dry, this psalm is for you.

  2. 1As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, Elohim.
  3. 2My soul thirsts for Elohim, for the living Elohim. When shall I come and appear before Elohim?
  4. 3My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually ask me, “Where is your Elohim?”
  5. 4These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to Elohim’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a kodesh day.
  6. Why Are You Downcast, O My Soul?

Three times the psalmist asks: 'Why are you downcast, O my soul?' And three times answers with hope.

  7. 5Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in Elohim! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.
  8. 6My Elohim, my soul is in despair within me. Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon, from the hill Mizar.
  9. 7Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me.
  10. 8YHWH will command his chesed in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the Elohim of my life.
  11. 9I will ask Elohim, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
  12. 10As with a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me, while they continually ask me, “Where is your Elohim?”
  13. 11Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in Elohim! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my Elohim.
